5 Top Tips for Storing Summer Produce!
1. Separate Ripe from Unripe
Ripe apples, bananas, blueberries, melons, peaches & pears emit ethylene gas. Accelerating ripening & potential rotting of nearby foods. Separate & refrigerate when ripe to slow down spoilage.
2. Keep Them Moist
Nothing beats the taste of fresh basil, cilantro, or parsley. Maximize freshness; moisten a cloth, or paper towel, loosely wrap in cylinder covering the ends. Place in a vegetable or produce saver bag.
3. Keep Them Dry
Moisture accelerates spoilage of some produce. Wash, dry & refrigerate fresh berries, cherries, lettuce & spinach in a container with built in vents for air circulation. Store fresh broccoli, celery, cucumbers, grapes, green beans & peppers with thin cloth or paper towel in a perforated or vented bag.
4. Store @ Room Temperature
Apples, apricots, avocados, peaches, pears & plums ripen after being picked. Store in a dish at room temperature with plenty of room to breathe until ready to eat.
5. Check your drawers
Do you prep & forget? Check your refrigerator compartment, add the avocado half, berries & mini carrots to your salad or grain bowl. Compost or discard produce that is turning. Moldy remains cause neighboring food to spoil quicker.
Summer is here! Use re-usable produce storage bags, glass containers, silicon food huggers & vented baskets. Worth the investment, they’ll extend the shelf life of your delicious fruits & veggies!
